PR #168's Notes section named several functions with a real
external-tool dependency that no `type -q`/`command -q`/`command -v`/
`which` guard covers anywhere in the tree, deliberately left out of
DEPENDENCIES to avoid breaking test_dependencies_resolve. Adds the
guard each was missing, then declares the dependency now that it
resolves:
- bkg, detach: nohup
- gitui: gitui (self-shadow; type -q -f to skip the function itself)
- play-media: mpv, vlc -- already guarded via `type -q -f $p` in a
loop, just never recognized as one (see next point)
- steam-dl: systemd-inhibit, steam
- wake-lock: systemd-inhibit
- split, spwin, tab: wezterm, konsole (kitty already declared)
docs/verify-manual.py's guard-detection regex only matched `type -q
<name>` immediately, so `type -q -f $p` (the `-f` flag excludes
functions from the match, needed wherever a wrapper shadows a binary
of its own name) was invisible to it -- both as a direct guard and
through the loop-variable indirection. Broadened both patterns to
skip over any flags between `-q` and the name/variable.
split/spwin/tab dispatch on $TERM/$TERM_PROGRAM/$KONSOLE_VERSION to
pick which terminal-specific binary to call, per this repo's C4
convention -- but those env vars only prove the terminal type, not
that its CLI binary is on $PATH: they propagate over ssh, so sshing
out from Kitty/WezTerm inherits the var on a remote host that never
installed the binary. Same latent gap in clone/clonet, whose
clone-in-kitty is a function Kitty's own shell integration injects,
not present on a remote shell that only inherited $TERM. All five now
check the actual thing they are about to call, not just the env var
that selects it.
Also guards and documents three more real, previously-undeclared
dependencies found by the same audit, unrelated to PR #168's named
list but the identical pattern: fast-cli (fast), lock (loginctl),
ports (lsof), screensleep (busctl).
docs/fish-config.md regenerated to match.
RETURNS previously conflated fish's $status exit code with genuine
stdout/printed output, e.g. rm listing "0/1" as if they were print
values rather than exit codes. Rename RETURNS to EXIT STATUS across
all 83 documented functions, and reintroduce RETURNS as a distinct
label reserved for the 15 functions that actually print to stdout.
Update build-manual.py's ENTRY_HEADS to render Exit Status before
Returns, manualtools.py's SECTIONS constant, and AGENTS.md's label
order and label-usage guidance to match. Add two verify-manual.py
regression tests: EXIT STATUS bodies must never contain stray
stdout/printed language, and Returns: must always render after
Exit Status: when both are present. Regenerate docs/fish-config.md.
Records each documented function's manual category in its own header, so
Section 5 can later be generated from source instead of hand-maintained
alongside it. Values reproduce the current grouping in
docs/manual/05-functions/ exactly; no documentation changes meaning here.
Four functions are skipped because they have no header at all yet
(branch, fc, gitup, sudo-toggle); they get one in the merge that follows.
Replace all ad-hoc inline comments between license headers and function
declarations with consistent SYNOPSIS / DESCRIPTION / ARGUMENTS / RETURNS /
EXAMPLE blocks across all 99 project-owned functions/ files. No executable
logic, variable names, or exit codes were modified.
Completes Task #6 from AGENTS.md (Retroactive Function Documentation
Standardization).
- Add comprehensive `--description` flags to all fish functions for better `help` and `functions` output.
- Introduce and correct `--wraps` flags to ensure proper completions for aliased commands (e.g., `top` wrapping `btop`, `zellij`, `upgrade` wrapping `paru`).
- Prepend descriptive comments before function definitions for better source readability.
- Add standard copyright and SPDX license identifiers to shell scripts.
- Enhance script robustness by ensuring consistent terminal checks (Kitty, WezTerm) and graceful fallbacks in window/tab spawning functions (`spwin`, `tab`).
- Implement graceful fallbacks to basic core utilities when preferred modern alternatives are missing (e.g., `top` falling back to system `top` if `btop` is missing, `view` falling back to `less` or `cat` if `nvim` is unavailable).
- Improve overall code consistency across the `functions/` directory.
- Wrap Kitty-specific abbreviations and functions with $TERM checks
- Resurrect WezTerm abbreviations and wrap with $TERM_PROGRAM checks
- Add check_fish_deps function to list and verify all fish-related dependencies
- Update README to recommend Kitty and WezTerm and document requirements
- Improve fallback behavior for rg outside of Kitty
